Tobi Restaurant, Ponsonby

Tobi Ponsonby – Visited by The Wine List NZ

We visited Tobi Ponsonby on its first week of opening and found it already buzzing with a Friday lunch crowd. Despite the rush, the team seated us quickly and delivered excellent service.

The European-inspired menu was a hit. We enjoyed:

  • Trevally Crudo
  • Venison Carpaccio
  • Shrimp Cocktail

The wine list at Tobi leans European, featuring a sharp “chilled red” section—right on trend. We were pleased to see a couple of bottles we also carry at The Wine List NZ, which you can enjoy at home.

About Tobi Ponsonby

Tobi is the latest venture from David Lee, the restaurateur behind Gochu, Aigo Noodle Bar, and The Candy Shop, this time joined by Albert Cho. Located on Ponsonby Road, it blends classic European bistro style with nostalgic Kiwi touches.

The space has an open, vibrant feel with Mediterranean-blue accents and a mezzanine level that lifts the energy. The entry is a little tight, but it adds to the lively welcome.

We noticed Tobi features two Italian wines we retail—both excellent picks for your next dinner party:

  • Alta Mora Etna Rosso – A volcanic red from Sicily with bright cherry and spice notes.
  • Pieropan Soave – A crisp, mineral white from Northern Italy. Great with seafood.

Bring a bit of Tobi home with you, whether you're hosting or just opening something special midweek.
