Greystone Vineyard Ferment Pinot Noir 2021 is the estate's flagship organic Pinot Noir, fermented out in the vineyard where the grapes grow, from the Omihi hills of North Canterbury.

BioGro Organic | North Canterbury | 95 Points Cameron Douglas MS

Tasting Notes

Rolls out of glass with lift and complexity of Indian spices (cumin, turmeric), sandalwood, berries and herbs. The palate is exquisite and long with delicacy and tension. The flow of cherry and red berries wrapped in earth and mild char.

A singular, vineyard-fermented Pinot Noir, savoury and complex, one of New Zealand's most distinctive reds.

Why you'll love it: This is Greystone's most ambitious wine, fermented out in the vineyard for a wild, savoury, utterly individual style, one for the cellar or a very special table.

Reviews

95 points, Outstanding, Cameron Douglas MS, August 2023: "A delicious wine with length and appeal."

92 points, James Suckling (2021 vintage): "medium-bodied with juicy tannins and a spicy finish."

The Process

Greystone's Vineyard Ferment series does something almost unheard of: the grapes are fermented outside, in the vineyard where they grew, using wild yeasts, rather than carted to the winery. The result is a wine of real individuality and a true sense of place.

About Greystone

Greystone sits on the limestone slopes of the Omihi hills in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury, where the Thomas family planted the estate from 2000. Every wine is estate-grown, fully certified organic with BioGro New Zealand, and grown, made and bottled on site, with Dom Maxwell winemaking since the early days. The north-facing limestone hills give the wines their mineral drive and concentration, and a minimal-intervention philosophy lets the soil, vines and season speak for themselves.

Perfect with roast duck, venison, or aged hard cheese. The wine's savoury depth and fine tannins match gamey, earthy dishes beautifully.
