Tasting Notes

The perfume/florals and spice of Syrah introduce a fruit-dominant, complex wine bursting with intense blueberry/raspberry/blackberry fruit flavours. Supple tannins, crisp acidity, and a touch of toasty oak combine on the palate to produce a succulent, lingering, spicy finish.

Bright, peppery Hawke's Bay Syrah, made to drink young and joyful.

Why you'll love it: An approachable, midweek-friendly Syrah with the floral lift and pepper of a cooler climate, lighter and fresher than a big Australian Shiraz. Lovely now, and good with a slight chill on a warm evening.

The Vineyard

The grapes come from Trinity Hill's three Gimblett Gravels vineyards, Gimblett Estate, Gimblett Stones and the Tin Shed, on free-draining, low-fertility soils swept by warm, dry westerly winds. Parcels were picked and fermented separately, mostly de-stemmed, with gentle daily pumping over of the skins, then matured for around eight months in seasoned French oak and stainless steel. It is released young to keep the perfume and fruit fresh.

About Trinity Hill

Trinity Hill was founded in 1993 as one of the early pioneers of Hawke's Bay's Gimblett Gravels, the free-draining, stony district laid down by the old Ngaruroro River and now recognised as one of New Zealand's benchmark sites for Syrah and Chardonnay. The idea was hatched over dinner at London's Bleeding Heart restaurant, and more than thirty years on the winery is known internationally for its food-friendly, terroir-driven reds and whites, led by its icon Syrah, Homage. Chief winemaker Warren Gibson has guided the cellar since 1997, a quality-over-quantity approach that has made Trinity Hill a fixture on serious restaurant lists.

Perfect with roast pork, grilled lamb, or a mushroom and lentil ragout. Its pepper and bright fruit suit lighter red-meat and earthy dishes, even with a slight chill.
